Marlborough, Massachusetts: Where All of New England Meets
Welcome to Marlborough, a vibrant city that’s rich in history and offers a delightful blend of amenities, events and natural beauty. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, there’s something here for everyone.
Early Settlement and Manufacturing Roots
- In 1656, pioneers from Sudbury petitioned the General Court for permission to establish a new settlement on the wild lands westward, about eight miles from Sudbury. This area became the town of Marlborough.
- The route leading west was known as The Great Trail, later called the King’s Highway, and today it is State Route 20.
- In 1680, Fort Meadow was deeded to Thomas Martin, a shoemaker from Marlborough, for six pounds and ten shillings. This marked the early roots of the town’s development.
- Shoe manufacturing began in 1812, laying the groundwork for growth.
Evolution to Present Day
- Originally part of Sudbury, Marlborough was incorporated as a town in 1660 and named after Marlborough, England.
- The adjoining Native American plantation of Okammakamefit was annexed in 1718.
- Over time, Marlborough diversified its economy beyond shoemaking. It became a hub for various industries, including textiles, machinery, and electronics.
- In the 20th century, high-tech companies and research institutions settled in Marlborough, contributing to its transformation into a modern city.
- Today, Marlborough continues to thrive as a vibrant community, balancing its rich history with innovation and progress2.
Marlborough’s journey from wilderness settlement to a dynamic city exemplifies resilience and adaptability. Its manufacturing heritage remains woven into its fabric, even as it embraces the challenges and opportunities of the present day.
